The symptoms vary between individuals and affect some people more severely than others. They tend to come and go in periods lasting a few days to a few months at a time. IBS is thought to affect up to one in five people at some point in their life.

Most people that come to therapy already visited their GP and tried all types of medicine. Your GP may be able to identify your IBS problems based on your symptoms, as it may be caused by certain foods or by any physical deficiency on your gut. If you doctor says it is psychological or if the medicines you are taking have some side effects it is time to visit a hypnotherapist. Your doctor may also recommend hypnotherapy to you as it one of the treatments recommended by the NHS.
