Phobia is more than a simple fear, is a type of anxiety disorder often recognised as irrational.

Phobias are more pronounced than fears. They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object.

If your phobia becomes very severe, you may have been restricting your day-to-day life and stop doing important things to avoid what is causing anxiety, it can also cause you a lot of distress.

There are 2 main categories of phobias:

Simple Phobia. Fear of spiders, dogs, snakes, dentists, enclosed spaces, or airplanes

Complex Phobia. Agoraphobia (fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult), Social Phobia

A person with agoraphobia may be scared of visiting a shopping centre, travelling on a public transport or leaving home. A person with social phobia may be scared of social situations such as public speaking, performing in social situations or even attend parties.

If you do not come into contact with the source of your phobia very often, it may not affect your everyday life. However, if you have phobia of flying it can affect your professional or personal life. If you have a complex phobia leading a normal life may be very difficult.

Almost all phobias can be successfully treated and cured. There are no medicines to treat phobia, and your GP may recommend you therapy. If you have to choose between different therapies, hypnotherapy is the fasted and easiest, often simple phobias can be treated in just one session.
